As you may have gathered Bencom Ltd is a R&D company specializing in IoT devices. My main foucus is on Wifi and Sigfox devices however it is a matter of horses for courses. If Wifi or Sigfox does not fit the bill other techologies may. For small amounts of data Sigfox is most likely the most cost effective. For larger data requirements Wifi or a combination of Wifi and Cellular technology may be your best bet. Also LoRaWan, in some instances, could be the best. Wifi is best suited to locations where a Wifi access point is nearby. Sigfox, LoRaWan and Cellular remote locations.

For anyone looking at investing in the new wave of interest in IoT device I urge you to first research and understand the ecosystem. A good starting point is to read the IoT Alliance Report published June 2017. This report provides an insight into the economic benefits for New Zealand.

Buzztech Ltd.

Bencom Ltd designed the proof of concept wireless IoT Bee Hive sensor system for Buzztech Ltd. Julian McCurdy's vision and passion for beekeeping immediately struck a chord with me. Vertical markets can be somewhat difficult. Beekeepers are a little set in their ways and uptake of new technology can be a sales challenge. Julian and I set about developing a minimum viable product to be used in conjunction with the Buzztech hive management software.

The Buzztech Bee Hive Sensor System was born. With the help of Sprout Agri-Tech Accelerator Program seed funding Julian and I took the development work I did and created a proof of concept which we trailed in the Bay of Plenty over the winter over period. We then used what we learned to improve the concept and handed the project over to a specialist company to create a commercial product.

Bencom Ltd designed the POC electronic hardware, circuit boards and housing frame. Developed the initial firmware, communications protocol using http 1.0, back end php code, database and analytic framework. An agile developmet process was used throughout and 3D concept drawings used to visualize the end product.
